PM Surya Ghar Yojana Gains Momentum Across India

The central government’s flagship scheme, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, is rapidly expanding its reach across Indian cities and towns, bringing rooftop solar power to thousands of households, schools, and public institutions.

Nagpur Leads the Way in Maharashtra

Nagpur continues to set the pace in Maharashtra, adding 124 new rooftop solar systems in just one month. With a cumulative total of 33,641 installations and a capacity of over 132 MW, the city now contributes more than 16% of the state’s total rooftop solar capacity under this scheme. Homeowners are receiving subsidies of up to ₹78,000 for 3 kW systems, along with free net-metering.

Schools in Prayagraj Go Solar

In Uttar Pradesh, the education sector is stepping into the solar era. The district of Prayagraj is installing rooftop solar panels on all government, aided, and private schools. This initiative is expected to cut electricity costs by up to 70%, promote sustainability, and create awareness about clean energy among students. Registrations for the scheme are open through the official portal.

Chandigarh Focuses on Residential Solar Adoption

The Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society (CREST) has intensified efforts to promote rooftop solar installations in residential areas. Through awareness campaigns and department-level coordination, CREST is encouraging both traditional ownership and the Resco model, where residents can opt for solar without any upfront investment.

Scheme Overview and Progress

Launched in February 2024, the PM Surya Ghar Yojana aims to solarize 1 crore households by offering central subsidies and streamlined application processes. So far, over 10 lakh homes have adopted solar power, contributing more than 3 GW to the nation’s rooftop solar capacity. The government targets 27 GW of new capacity by March 2027.

What Lies Ahead

With consistent policy push, financial support, and growing public interest, the scheme is expected to expand to more cities, institutions, and even apartment complexes. Efforts are underway to ease the approval process and ensure timely implementation through DISCOM partnerships.
