PM Modi Joins G7 Leaders in Canada as Global Tensions Escalate

Kananaskis, Alberta – The 2025 G7 Summit kicked off in Canada with global leaders gathering to address pressing challenges such as climate change, energy security, artificial intelligence, and ongoing geopolitical conflicts. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Canada to participate in the summit’s outreach sessions, marking his sixth consecutive G7 appearance.

Hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, this year’s summit also includes discussions on Ukraine, global trade, and the role of emerging economies. PM Modi’s presence highlights India’s growing influence as the world’s fifth-largest economy and a leading voice for the Global South.

The summit comes at a time of rising tension in the Middle East. United States President Donald Trump made headlines by departing early from the summit to return to Washington amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran. Before leaving, President Trump joined other G7 leaders in issuing a statement supporting Israel’s right to self-defense while calling for de-escalation and a ceasefire in Gaza. The leaders also reaffirmed their stance against Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Despite Trump’s early exit, the summit is continuing with a focus on building consensus through issue-based declarations rather than a single joint communiqué. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called on G7 nations to increase support for his country and to impose stricter sanctions on Russia.

During his visit, PM Modi is expected to meet with several global leaders, including his Canadian counterpart. Key areas of discussion include energy cooperation, digital infrastructure, AI collaboration, and investment opportunities.

Modi’s participation is seen as a strategic move to strengthen India’s role on the world stage while reinforcing partnerships with key economies. The Indian diaspora in Calgary welcomed the Prime Minister with enthusiasm, underlining the significance of India’s growing global engagement.

The summit continues through June 17, with outreach sessions and bilateral meetings expected to shape the global agenda in the months ahead.
