Mumbai: In a major relief for electricity consumers in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a historic reduction in power tariffs. The government has decided to cut electricity rates by 10% in the first year, with a gradual reduction totaling 26% over the next five years.
Sharing the news on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, CM Fadnavis stated that this is the first time in the state’s history that electricity tariffs are being reduced. The decision was made possible after the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) approved a proposal from MSEDCL (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited).
70% Consumers Use Less Than 100 Units – Big Benefit Ahead
According to the Chief Minister, approximately 70% of electricity consumers in the state use less than 100 units per month. These users will be the primary beneficiaries of the 10% rate reduction. The move is expected to benefit domestic, industrial, and commercial consumers alike.
Renewable Energy Driving Future Savings
CM Fadnavis also highlighted that the state is accelerating the implementation of the Chief Minister’s Solar Agriculture Feeder Scheme 2.0 to ensure daytime electricity supply for farmers. He added that increased focus on renewable energy will help reduce future electricity procurement costs, enabling the government to maintain affordable tariffs in the long run.
Rs 66,000 Crore Savings Projected in Power Purchase
As per a report by ABP Majha, the state expects to save around ₹66,000 crore in electricity purchases over the next five years. By 2030, Maharashtra’s power generation capacity is projected to reach 81,000 megawatts, with 31,000 megawatts expected to come from renewable sources.
From Annual Hikes to Historic Reductions
Fadnavis pointed out that traditionally, there used to be an annual recommendation of a 10% increase in electricity rates. However, for the first time, a 10% reduction has been recommended. He described it as a people-centric decision that brings great satisfaction to share with the citizens of Maharashtra.
Conclusion
This landmark decision by the Maharashtra government is set to provide substantial financial relief to millions of consumers. In a time of rising costs, a reduced electricity burden will not only ease household expenses but also boost agricultural and industrial productivity. The shift toward renewable energy reinforces the state’s long-term commitment to sustainability and economic efficiency.
