No Toll Tax on Two-Wheelers, Confirms Union Minister Amid Rumors

In response to recent viral reports claiming that toll tax will be applicable on two-wheelers from July 15, 2025, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has issued a strong clarification. He stated that no such decision has been proposed, and two-wheelers will continue to be exempt from toll charges.

Gadkari’s Clarification

Taking to social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Gadkari wrote, “Some media houses are spreading misleading news about toll tax being imposed on two-wheelers. No such decision has been proposed. The exemption on toll tax for two-wheelers will remain in effect. Spreading sensational and false news without verifying facts is not responsible journalism. I strongly condemn it.”

What Did the Reports Claim?

Several media outlets had claimed that from July 15, 2025, all two-wheelers would be required to pay toll tax on national highways. These reports also stated that two-wheelers would need to install FASTag like other vehicles and that non-compliance could lead to a penalty of ₹2,000.

NHAI’s Stand

Sources within the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have reportedly dismissed these claims, stating that no official notification or directive has been issued regarding toll collection from two-wheelers through FASTag.

Annual FASTag Pass Announced

Earlier, on June 18, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced a new initiative: a FASTag-based annual pass priced at ₹3,000. Effective from August 15, 2025, this pass is designed exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. The pass will be valid for either one year or up to 200 trips — whichever comes first — and will simplify travel by eliminating the need for frequent recharges.

Conclusion

The government has clearly denied any move to impose toll tax on two-wheelers. Minister Gadkari reassured that the existing exemption will remain intact. Citizens are advised not to believe or spread unverified news and rely only on official government announcements for accurate information.
